Getting Started

Set up your coordinate system, optionally load an alignment, check your position, record points and export the result.

Understanding coordinates in VIA

• Grid coordinates (Easting/Northing) are positions in a chosen coordinate reference system, usually expressed in metres.
• Geodetic coordinates (latitude/longitude) describe a position using global geographic coordinates.
• Alignment-referenced coordinates (chainage/offset) describe distance along a selected alignment and sideways distance from it. VIA uses chainage; it is also called stationing or metreage in some contexts.

Your first field task

1. Open Settings and choose an active Coordinate System. You can select an available system or use Fetch to search the MapTiler coordinate-system catalogue and add a result locally.
2. If you need to navigate or calculate against an alignment, use Import in the Alignment section to load a LandXML/XML file, then choose its active alignment.
3. Allow location access when VIA requests it. VIA uses your device’s current location to provide position information.
4. Open Navigation to view your live grid position. With an active alignment, VIA also shows chainage and offset relative to it.
5. Open Survey, create a named survey, then select Continue.
6. Record a point, adding a point number and any label or notes you need.
7. Use the share control to export the survey when you are ready.

Navigation

Navigation presents a live map and Easting/Northing position when a coordinate system is active. Select an alignment to also see your position as chainage and offset.

Survey

Create a survey with a name, then record the current position as a point. Each point can have a number, optional label and notes, a Point or Line class, and recorded horizontal accuracy.

Calculator

The Calculator converts between Easting/Northing and chainage/offset for the active alignment. Choose E/N or CH/OFF input, enter two values, and view the corresponding result.

Export

From an active survey, use the share control to export it through your device’s standard share sheet. Options include grid CSV (Easting, Northing and level), geodetic CSV, KML, and a LandXML alignment generated from the survey points.
